At the end of last year, the latest of the Rare Cask Collection Range dating back to 1965 was launched, some of these vintage expressions were discovered when the distillery re-opened in 2008.

Description

Glenglassaugh 1986 30 Year Old is from Cask #1393, Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon Barrel and is at 42.6% ABV. 425 bottles produced.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Dark chocolate, red grape, blackcurrants, black pepper and a floral oak spices.
  • Palate: Fresh plum syrup, heather honey, gentle chocolate notes, candied ginger and soft barley sugar.
  • Finish: Candied ginger and soft barley sugar lingering.

At the end of last year, the latest of the Rare Cask Collection Range dating back to 1965 was launched, some of these vintage expressions were discovered when the distillery re-opened in 2008. Glenglassaugh master blender, Rachel Barrie, was quoted saying: “The eight casks bottled as Glenglassaugh’s Rare Cask Batch 3 are perfect illustrations of the distillery prior to mothballing in 1986. Aged in oak for between 30 and 50 years, each cask in the series has a unique profile shaped by decades of maturation in our coastal warehouses. These rare casks embody the richest elements of our motto ‘Per Mare Per Terras’ and I look forward to sharing these with whisky enthusiasts everywhere.”

GLENGLASSAUGH’S UNIQUE HISTORY

Glenglassaugh Distillery, founded by Colonel James Moir in 1875, lies at the edge of Sandend Bay. The distillery prospered due to the quality whisky from Colonel James Moir and his two nephews. After his death, his two nephews ran the distillery with an increased production due to the high demand. In 1892, after the untimely death of one of the nephews, the distillery was bought over by Highland Distillery Company. Unfortunately after only 15 years, the distillery was closed after a decline in demand in 1907.

After more then 50 years of the distilling equipment remaining silent, the Highland Distillery Company re-opened its doors in 1960. Then in 1986, the company decided to close the distillery however those whiskies produced during the 60s, 70s and early 80s have in recent years won awards and international recognition.

The revival came in 2008, when a group of whisky enthusiasts were looking for a distillery with heritage which produced high quality single malt Scotch whisky. In 2013, the BenRiach Distillery Company took over Glenglassaugh distillery with the intention to bring this iconic distillery fully back to life by giving it the investment, commitment and care it deserves.
